PRESS RELEASE: Longview-Kelso, Washington, Tuesday, November 17, 2009: Nolan Clark will go down in history as the first player ever signed by the Cowlitz Black Bears of the West Coast League. Clark, a freshman this year at UNLV, is a hard-hitting catcher and a pitcher of note. “We’re expecting to use Nolan behind the plate and on the mound,” said Black Bears coach Bryson LeBlanc. “He brings talent and character to our team.”
Clark, a California native, is no stranger to handling a mature pitching staff. Along with battery mate Tyler Matzek (2009 first round draft pick of the Colorado Rockies), Clark played for Capistrano Valley High School, the 2009 CIF Southern Section Champions. A right-hander, Clark throws the ball 90-plus MPH. This spring at UNLV he’s expected to compete for the starting job behind the plate, and earn some appearances as a closer for the Runnin’ Rebels.
“We’re excited to have a player of Clark’s ability as our first player,” added Black Bears general manager Grant Wilson. “We’ll be signing more players soon, and I believe fans will be impressed with the level of talent that we’re putting together.”
The Black Bears are one of two expansion teams entering the WCL in 2010. The Walla Walla Sweets are also entering the league, and will visit Story Field August 3, 4, and 5, the final home series of the regular season.
Season ticket deposits for the 2010 Black Bears season are now being taken. A $20 refundable per seat deposit puts fans in line to select season ticket locations. Ticket deposit forms are available at the team’s temporary website www.westcoastleague.com/cowlitz.
The Black Bears are members of the West Coast League, a nine-team, professional-like wood-bat summer college league. For more information on the league, visit www.westcoastleague.com.
