Cowlitz Team to Have a Growl -- Black Bears it Is.

Longview-Kelso, Washington: Monday, August 31, 2009: Press Release: “We wanted a nickname with an edge, but a name that ties into the area and that youngsters can associate with,” said General Manager Grant Wilson, in announcing that the new West Coast League team will be known as the Cowlitz Black Bears. “A black bear can strike fear into an opponent, it’s indigenous to our area, and show me a youngster that doesn’t like a little, stuffed black bear.”

“We appreciate all the fans who entered the Name Your Team Contest”, said team owner Tony Bonacci. “There were hundreds of terrific nicknames, but after extensive research Black Bears seemed perfect.”

The team’s primary logo is a “C” with a black bear inside the letter. Wilson indicated additional team logos will be unveiled along with the team’s uniforms around World Series time. Fans will soon be able to explore the Black Bears official website and authentic team merchandise will be available soon on line.

Diane Searing was the winner of the “Name Your Team Contest”, conducted by the Daily News. She receives two season tickets for the Black Bears 2010 & 2011 seasons.

Ticket deposits for the 2010 season are now being taken. “This is a great baseball town, and our venue will be the place to be. It’s cozy and that means tickets will be at a premium, so we urge fans to get their deposits in early,” added Wilson. A $20 refundable per seat deposit puts fans in line to select season ticket seat locations. Ticket deposit forms are available at the team’s temporary website www.westcoastleague.com/cowlitz.

The new WCL club will play 30 home games throughout the summer, starting next June, at Story Field.

The Black Bears are members of the West Coast League, an eight-team, professional-like wood-bat summer college league. The WCL features pro prospects from major conferences across the country. More than 100 WCL alums are playing affiliated professional baseball this season, and 13 ex-WCL stars have played in the big leagues this season.
