Four in a row

Longview, Wash.- Cowlitz rebounded Sunday against Gresham and took the rubber match 6-2 to win their fourth series in a row.

The game featured a battle of the aces and both Corbin Powers (R-SR University of Portland) and Rob Reaser acted like it. Through three and a half innings only four batters reached base.

But in the bottom of the fourth the Black Bears (7-2, 18-18) finally broke through first. Kona Quiggle (SO Grand Canyon) hit a two-run single to open the scoring. On the play the GreyWolves first baseman threw over the head of the third baseman and Mark Pearson (JR Abilene Christian) also scored. The next batter Nick Roberts (SO Washington) hit an RBI sacrifice fly to bring home Quiggle.

Gresham (4-7, 14-24) answered with a lead-off home run in the fifth to make it 4-1. The Black Bears put the game out of reach in the seventh. A lead-off homer from Roberts gave Cowlitz a four run lead again. Two batters later Ryan Kim (SO University of Portland) hit an RBI double which scored Dane Stankiewicz (SO Grand Canyon) to give the Bears their biggest lead 6-1.

Gresham didn't quit in the ninth. The GreyWolves loaded the bases and scored a run on a 6-4-3 double play but Joey Morris (SO University of Portland) induced a groundout to third to end the game.

Powers earned the victory in his final start of the summer. Powers finished the season with a 4-2 record. The Bears ace pitched five innings giving up just one run on three hits and struck out seven batters along with three walks. Trevor Conn (R-SR Dallas Baptist) threw two innings in his final appearance as well. Conn gave up just one hit with four strikeouts. Cole Henderson (SO Nevada) made his first appearance since June 10 and lasted an inning giving up one hit and struck out one Gresham batter.

The Black Bears got back to .500 on the season. It was Cowlitz's third rubber match win in a row after the Bears dropped their first two of the season.

Cowlitz travels to Port Angeles for the first time ever after the All-Star break Wednesday-Friday.
