Bears Drop Tough One, 5-4 in the 14th

Mark Garcia

(Longview, WA) - It took 14 innings and just over four hours for the Kitsap Blue Jackets to earn their first ever win over the Cowlitz Black Bears. The Blue Jackets (17-13) even up the three-game series with the Bears (11-20-1, 8-19 WCL) at one a piece with the rubber match set for Saturday at 6:35 PM.

Kitsap took a big 4-0 lead in the seventh off a three-run home run from Chase Anselment and another on a wild pitch. But the Bears got to within one, 4-3 in the bottom half.

Designated hitter Braxton Miller (Lewis-Clark State, Jr.) singled to left. That was followed by right fielder Ryan Sheeks’ (Concordia, Jr.) double to left. With two in scoring position, catcher Mike Turay (Reno, So.) doubled to right-center to plate both. A ground-out by right fielder Pierce Bily (UC Irvine, Fr.) moved Turay to third, before shortstop Duncan Satherlie (UNLV, Fr.) drove him in with a sacrifice fly to left.

The Bears tied it up in the eighth when second baseman Jason Mahood (San Francisco, Rs.-Fr.) scored on a base hit from Miller. Mahood had doubled to reach base.

In the top of the 14th, Andrew Mistone reached on a ground rule double to left. A wild pitch by reliever Jason Westerberg (Santa Clara, Rs.-So.) moved Mistone to third before Aaron Johnson hit a grounder to first baseman Garrison McLagan (Missouri, So.). McLagan threw to home in time to get Mistone, but he was called safe when Turay missed the tag.

Satherlie singled to lead off the bottom of the inning, but Kitsap’s Antone Saltvick got out of the inning to earn the win. The Bears had chances to score in both the 11th and 12th innings, with bases loaded and less than two outs, but couldn’t convert.

Saltvick earned his second win of the season, tossing 2.2 innings, giving up one hit and striking out three. Westerberg (0-2) took the loss, giving up one earned run off one hit and a walk, and struck out one in 2.0 innings.

Reliever Mark Garcia (UC Riverside, Fr.) kept the Bears in the game, tossing 5.2 innings of shutout ball. Garcia gave up three hits and a walk, and struck out eight Blue Jackets. Starter Joey Pulitano (Seattle, Fr.) got the no-decision, giving up three hits and three walks and added one strikeout in 5.0 innings.

Satherlie had two hits and an RBI and Miller added two base knocks and scored a run. Mahood, Turay, Sheeks, and third baseman Stefan Sabol (Oregon, Fr. to be) each doubled.

Saturday is WSU Cougar Alumni Association night. The Cougars have reserved Party Deck tickets, get yours at the ticket office in the left field corner of David Story Field using the promo code ‘Butch”. The Bears are also offering $5 GA tickets to any participants of the STP Bicycle Classic.
