University of Washington right-handed pitcher Matt Gorman has signed with the Cowlitz Black Bears for the inaugural 2010 season. Gorman, a red-shirt freshman, is coming to the Black Bears with experience, talent, and a local connection. Were extremely excited to have Matt pitch for us this summer, said Black Bears coach Bryson LeBlanc. Hes one of those pitchers that has the durability to pitch out of the bullpen and the stuff to be a frontline starter.
Matt becomes the first Huskie to sign with the Black Bears. A native of Edmunds, WA and 2007 graduate of Meadowdale High School, Gorman lead his high school team to the league and district championship in his senior season. His father played football for the Huskies and his brother played baseball at the University of Washington. Whenever you have the opportunity to sign a player that has local ties you have to jump at it, said Black Bears General Manager Grant Wilson. With the type of arm he has, mixed with his maturity and knowledge of the game, we feel Matt is on track to have a breakout summer.
In addition to Gorman, the Black Bears have signed hard-throwing UNLV right-handed pitcher Brady Zuniga, and left-handed hitting infielder Duncan Satherlie from UNLV. Zuniga and Satherlie join UNLV teammate Nolan Clark, the first player to sign a Black Bears contract, on the 2010 roster.
The Black Bears begin play this June and are one of two expansion teams entering the WCL in 2010. The Walla Walla Sweets are also entering the league, and will visit Story Field August 3, 4, and 5, the final home series of the regular season.
